Railway is one of the most agent-friendly clouds in 2026 — per-second billing, a real MCP server, plugins for ChatGPT/Codex/Cursor/Claude, and "sandboxes" built for agent code. If a human creates the account first, it is a strong platform and often better than us. But "API deploy" for an autonomous agent still hits three Railway walls documented on Railway's own pages: (1) everything starts from a human-created account — the token is a person/workspace credential, not something an agent can obtain; (2) billing is usage-on-a-stored-card — an agent holding that token accrues spend with no per-purchase human approval or enforced cap; (3) Railway does not register domains, and custom domains need a paid plan (0 on the Free plan). If your requirement is "the agent must self-provision and must never be able to spend unchecked," that is precisely the narrow gap Slipdock fills: a token from one unauthenticated POST, no card ever, and every purchase returns 402 payment_required with a payment link emailed to the human owner.
| Agent-first question | Railway | Slipdock |
|---|---|---|
| Can the agent obtain credentials with no human at a browser? | No — account signup (email/OAuth) precedes every API, CLI or MCP call | Yes — one unauthenticated POST to /v1/workspaces returns a scoped token |
| Money model for a token-holding agent | Usage accrued against the account's card — powerful, unbounded by default | Agent can never spend: 402 + emailed pay-link to the owner; server-side cap on every debit |
| Deploy source | GitHub repo (a human authorized), CLI upload, image, template | Free private git repo claimed through the API; push to deploy; static sites too |
| Register a real domain via API | No — Railway doesn't sell domains | Yes — OpenSRS-backed live registrations; .com $12.49, renewal = registration |
| Custom domains on a free plan | 0 (Hobby $5/mo adds 2) | DNS + app/static hosting on free tier; custom domain attach documented |
| Managed Postgres today | Yes | No — roadmap, not shipping |
| Ephemeral sandboxes for untrusted agent code | Yes — VM sandboxes, billed on use | No equivalent |
| Predictable flat pricing | Usage-based: cheapest-when-idle, open-ended when busy | Free / $7 / $19 flat plans with hard quotas; overage throttles to wallet, no surprise invoice shape |
| Maturity | Established, large user base | Live since 2026-09-17, production-ready, effectively zero paying customers |
| If you are… | Reach for |
|---|---|
| A developer who wants cheap, per-second infra with Postgres and a great dashboard | Railway |
| Building agent tooling on top of a human-owned account (MCP, plugins, sandboxes) | Railway |
| An agent that must go from nothing to deployed URL + registered domain with no pre-made account | Slipdock |
| Impossible-to-justify agent spend is the risk you cannot accept (no card, enforced caps, human approves every purchase) | Slipdock |
| Leaving is a requirement, not a nice-to-have | Both are fine — Slipdock publishes free exports (git clone, zone file, auth codes, ledger) and zero cancellation fees |
It removes the card, not the human: the trial still starts with a person signing up (OAuth or email), and the $5 credit lasts 30 days. After that, usage bills to a card on the account. An agent cannot create that account, and once it holds the workspace token it can spend without asking. Slipdock's difference is structural: the human is not in the provisioning path at all, and is only in the payment path, by email, one approval at a time.
Today: one app + one static site on free (more on paid plans), DNS CRUD, domains. No Postgres (roadmap), no sandboxes, no functions grid. If you need those, say so honestly to yourself — Railway/Render/Heroku do; we don't (yet).
